 | Jenks Trojan Football - 1921 Alumni Thanks for the memories Since the early 1900's, many great Trojan football players have contributed to Trojan football history. From Francis Hunter, pictured above far left, and Charles Dwelley, namesake of Hunter -Dwelley Stadium, to every player who has worn a Trojan football uniform has left their mark in Trojan football history. Some players were blessed to further their football careers beyond their high school playing days. However, for the majority of the football alumni, the work ethic, discipline and teamwork learned playing Trojan football have been more instrumental in helping them excel in their personal, educational and professional lives. While each individual name may not be listed on this page, every Trojan Alumni is a life long member of the Trojan football family and not forgotten. |

In his home town of Jenks, Oklahoma, Bob played the position of tackle for the Jenks High School football team. He made quite a name for himself among hometown folk there. Standing six feet, two inches and weighing in at 225 pounds, Bob was a formidable opponent on the football field. He helped lead his Trojan football team to an undefeated season in 1954 with a 10–0 record. In 1954 and 1955, Bob was selected for the High School All-Star squads. In a December 5, 1954 issue of the Daily Oklahoman, his football coach, Frank Herald, stated Bob was “the best lineman I‘ve ever coached.” After graduating high school in 1955, Bob attended the University of Tulsa on a football scholarship where he continued his all-star performance. After playing at TU for one year, he transferred to Central State University, known now as University of Central Oklahoma. Coached by Broncos head coach Al Blevins, Bob’s talent and athletic ability was recognized as he was selected for the collegiate all-star team in 1959, as an All-American in 1960, and was named as the college lineman of the year in 1961. His achievements in college football had caught the eye of the National Football League and he was drafted in 15th round of the 1961 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. After signing a contract with the 49ers, Bob was told when to report to training camp and told to report at 264 pounds. After saying his goodbyes and heading west to California, Bob reported to training camp for the 49ers, but he was one pound over weight. The team fined him $100! This was a lot of money in 1961, and Bob was not happy. “I only had $200 and they took half of it, Bob told me, “that didn’t set well with me so I left,” he dded. When Bob returned to his home town, he wasn’t for sure what he wanted to do. If the 49ers would have released him from his contract, he could have played for the Denver Broncos, but they weren’t about to do that. In my opinion, if they couldn’t have him, they sure didn’t want to have to play against him! Oh, and that contract? According to Bob, he had signed for $2,000 a year. Bob told me if it would have been the amount of some of today’s players’ contracts, he wouldn’t have minded too much having to pay that fine and lose a pound or two! Kenneth W. Ishmael - 1939 Mr. Ishmael set many records during his playing days there, but the one he remembers the most is his 101 punt return for a TD. Back then they counted it from the point in the end zone rather than from the plane of the goal line. Dad was coached by his older brother, my uncle, Emmett Ishmael. Since then there have been other Ishmaels coaching Trojan football, my cousin Marshall Ishmael and his sons Kevin and Mike Ishmael. There have been many more Ishmaels play for the Trojans over the years, but the most outstanding one was my father (per the record books). He went on to the Service during WW II and then to become a U.S. Postal Inspector (federal law enforcement agency similar to the FBI). Respectfully submitted: Larry Ishmael Marion Anglin - 1926 Northwestern Oklahoma State University Coached football and basketball at Henryetta, Oklahoma in the 1940's & inducted in the Oklahoma Coaching Hall of Fame A.D. Jenks Alumni Kenneth W. Ishmael Class of 1939 by Larry Ishmael My father, Kenneth W. Ishmael, is a graduate of Jenks High in the class of 1939. He set many records during his playing days there, but the one he remembers the most is his 101 punt return for a TD. Respectfully submitted: Larry Ishmael |
